Winter/Spring 2012

The Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. received $4,000 to support five projects. MEDF awarded $500 to the Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy, enabling 20 middle school girls to explore and engage in health and financial learning opportunities. Teen LIFT, an initiative that exposes high school youth to academic, career, and personal development activities, received $1,000 to support its Black College Tour. The Delsprites Club, a program that immerses 60 high school young women in cultural, community services, and leadership development activities, received $500. MEDF awarded $1,000 to the chapter to support its efforts to provide 500 plus-sized suits for its “It Suits Me” campaign, a partnership between Jackets for Jobs (a local charity) and Bennett College, a historically black college for women in North Carolina. The chapter also received $1,000 for its Parents Boot Camp, which offered workshops on healthy lifestyles, finances, and raising productive children to parents. The service area is metro Detroit.

MEDF awarded $2,000 to the Marygrove College Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series (CAALS). Each spring since 1989, CAALS has brought a critically renowned African American author to Detroit to conduct a master class for high school and college students and a free public reading. Past featured authors include Octavia Butler, Pearl Cleage, Gloria Naylor, and Walter Mosley. Celebrated poet Harryette Mullen was the featured author in 2011. CAALS used funds to provide books to more than 300 metro Detroit high school students. The service area is metro Detroit.

The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) received $2,000 for its “Healthy Kids & Kidneys” program. This ongoing initiative offers an eight-week curriculum focused on reducing the rate of obesity among Detroit youth. Sixth grade students participate in activities aimed at educating them about the benefits of physical activity and good nutrition. The service area is Metro Detroit.
